Pak-Kan Pong aka Chet Bleed is an artist, composer, and performer who explores the realms of sound through exquisitely created performances and installations. His sonic approach is rooted in experimental and electronic music, which reflects on the essence and malleability of sound through the creation of sound installations and live performances, using sound as material and combining it with different media. His works are passionate about exploring the space and time of sound, employing sound, and exploring specially-made kinetic and electroacoustics instruments to achieve storytelling.
Pong started his formal education in composition at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts by Clarence Mak and Steve Hui(aka Nerve). Since 2022, however, Pong has been selected to take part in international composition academies, studying with leading composers including, among others, Philippe Leroux, Sarah Nemtsov, Lisa Streich, Isabel Mundry, Hanna Hartman, Wim Henderickx and Jorrit Tamminga, at the likes of Festival Mixtur, CEME Composers’ mastercourse with Philippe Leroux and Sarah Nemtsov, International Composition Masterclass by mdi ensemble, SoundMine 2022 and IRCAM ManiFeste.
Pong’s works have been performed by, among others, MDI Ensemble (IT), Ensemble LUX:NM (DE), Meitar Ensemble (IL), New Morse Code (US), and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HK) at the Festival Mixtur (ES), CEME Festival (IL) and International Composition Masterclass (IT). Pong electronic pieces have been performed internationally at festivals such as NYCEMF 2023 and International Computer Music Conference 2023. His works have been exhibited or performed at various venues including Freespace, RTHK Radio 4, PMQ, Osage Gallery, EJAR, Taichung City Tun District Art Center, Hong Kong Arts Centre, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Pong was awarded second runner-up in New Generation 2022, Toolbox Percussion International Composition Competition 2021, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival 2022 Arts X Tech Creative Competition. During his academic years, he was awarded the Lions Music Foundation Scholarship in 2021 & 2022, Parsons Outstanding Composition Student for Creative Music Scholarships, the CASH Composition Scholarship, the Doming Lam Memorial Scholarship, and the Catherine S Y Chan Creative Project Fund.
